Poe's Valentines: To One in Paradise (1833)

To One in Paradise (1833)

"To One in Paradise" was first published without a title as part of the short story "The Visionary" (later renamed "The Assignation"). It evolved into "To Ianthe in Heaven" and then into "To One Beloved" before being named "To One in Paradise" in the February 25, 1843 Saturday Museum.

Modernist poet William Carlos Williams considered "To One In Paradise" one of his most preferred poems.

The poem inspired a song composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan. "To One In Paradise" was published posthumously in 1904 and written for a tenor voice with piano. It is also the basis of the song To One In Paradise on the Alan Parsons Project 1976 album Tales of Mystery and Imagination.

To One in Paradise
by
Edgar Allan Poe

Thou wast all that to me, love,
For which my soul did pine-
A green isle in the sea, love,
A fountain and a shrine,
All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers,
And all the flowers were mine.

Ah, dream too bright to last!
Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise
But to be overcast!
A voice from out the Future cries,
"On! on!"- but o'er the Past
(Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies
Mute, motionless, aghast!

For, alas! alas! me
The light of Life is o'er!
"No more- no more- no more-"
(Such language holds the solemn sea
To the sands upon the shore)
Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree
Or the stricken eagle soar!

And all my days are trances,
And all my nightly dreams
Are where thy grey eye glances,
And where thy footstep gleams-
In what ethereal dances,
By what eternal streams.

7 Harry Potter tattoos from die hard fans

I’m a Harry Potter fan, I read all the books, most of them the day they where released. I saw all the movies on the big screen and later on DVD. But there is a whole fan base out there that are really hard core fans, so much they have a Harry Potter related tattoo. Now I don’t shy away from tattoos, I have one myself but I don’t think I am a fan of anything so much as to get a tattoo of the object of my fanaticism.
1. The Golden Snitch
By capturing the Golden Snitch the team wins the Quiditch match.

2. Expecto Patronum

A charm spell

3.Owl and books

Not specific Harry Potter but at true fan will recognize it as a Harry Potter tattoo.

4. Hogwarts crest

The school crest with all four the animals representing each house.

5. Dobby the house elf

The Malfoy’s house elf who was freed by Harry

6. The Deathly Hallows

The symbol for “The wand, the stone and the cloak”.

7. The Dark Mark

This mark is branded on the arms of Lord Voldemort followers, the Death Eaters. Very much like the tattoo shown above, inside the left arm.

I was surprised when researching for this list how many people have The Dark Mark as a tattoo. Given the story is fictional but still, the whole Harry Potter story evolves around good versus evil. Ironically the other popular Harry Potter tattoo is The Deathly Hallows which helped Harry Potter kill Voldemort.

Some More Geeky Images from Space

Space is full of images that make a geek’s heart flutter. But how about when we point those cameras back down at us on Earth?
Google Earth has created a treasure trove of geeky images. Here are some of my favorites.

The Davis-Monthan Air Force base

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is a key Air Combat Command installation. The 355th Wing is the host unit providing medical, logistical, and operational support to all assigned units. The wing's missions are to train A-10 and OA-10 pilots and to provide A-10 and OA-10 close support and forward air control to ground forces worldwide. The wing is also tasked to provide command, control, and communications countermeasures in support of tactical forces with its EC-130H aircraft and, employing the EC-130E aircraft, provide airborne command, control, and communications capabilities for managing tactical air operations in war and other contingencies worldwide. The airplane graveyard in Arizona is operated by the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group

Apple HQ

Not to be out done, the Apple Headquarters looks just as geeky.

Coca-Cola sign

Near Arica, Chile, this sign was made with 70,000 empty coke bottles.

Triangle target at Area 51.

Since this symbol is in the middle of a Nevada desert, I assume it’s used for bombing practice. If not, this nearby target must be.

Firefox (Crop) Cirlce on Google Maps

Back in August 2006, a group students from Oregon State University Linux Group created the ‘Firefox Circle‘ in an oat field near amity Oregon. The crop circle has made it to Google Maps now. Click the image below to be taken to Goggle Maps

Dubai palm islands from google earth

The Palm islands in Dubai are the three largest artificial islands in the world, being constructed by Nakheel Properties, the premier property developer in the United Arab Emirates; they are known as The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira.
The islands were the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who recognized the Dubai's potential as a tourist destination. Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent, and will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment opportunities, all within a unique and inspiring setting. Located off the coast of Dubai in the Persian Gulf The Palm islands will make a sizeable contribution to the city’s coastline, adding a total of 520 km of beachfront.

12 Crazy Celebrity Tattoos

Why would anyone want to get Britney's worst phase permanently on their skin? Luckily for Britney, hair grows back; unfortunately for the owner of this tattoo, ink is forever. (Link)

Nixon's Tattoo (Link)

This tattoo of Pope John Paul II looks so real that it got a first prize in a Brazilian Tattoo convention. (Link)

Out of all the stupid things this guy could have had tattooed on himself, he decided to go with Frank Zappa picking his nose. (Link)

The ultimate science tattoo: Jack Newton, 23, decided to have his right leg inked with the theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking's face after reading his best-selling book A Brief History of Time. (Link)

Apparently, celebrity tattoos are for amateurs. Real fandom means tattooing a celebrity's adopted offspring in a prominent and permanent place of one's body. Andy Bowling, a 42 year old Texan man, has got both Brad and Maddox tattooed on his body. (Link)

Tattoo of Henry David Thoreau sitting on a pumpkin, surrounded by his famous pronouncement "I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion" typeset - well, inked, rather - in Webster Italic WF from the Minuteman Printshop. (Link)

This person has Harry Potter portrayed in his limb! (Link)

This guy grew up watching Bob Ross with his Grandmother. After she passed away he got this as a funny reminder of their time together. How sweet! (Link)

Man with Madonna's Tattoo Postcard by Photographer David LaChapelle. I bet Madonna would love this tattoo. (Link)

We know everybody loves Oprah, but this tattoo is far off the limits.

Pretty girl + Hope Poster + Tattoo = not a very nice combination. (Link)

10 of the World's Smallest Animals

World’s Smallest Dog: 12.4 cm (4.9-inch) tall
At 1.4 pounds and 4.9 inches tall, Ducky, a yappy short-coat Chihuahua from Charlton (Massachusetts, USA), holds the Guinness World Record for the world's smallest living dog (by height). Ducky succeeds Danka Kordak of Slovakia, a Chihuahua who measured 5.4 inches tall. The smallest dog ever, according to Guinness, was a dwarf Yorkshire terrier who stood 2.8 inches tall.

World's Smallest Snake: 10.1 cm (4-inch) long
Leptotyphlops carlae is the world's smallest species of snake, with adults averaging just under four inches in length. Found on the Caribbean island of Barbados, the species --which is as thin as a spaghetti noodle and small enough to rest comfortably on a U.S. quarter-- was discovered by Blair Hedges.

World’s Smallest Fish: 7.9 mm (0.3-inch) long
On January 2006, the world's smallest fish was discovered on the Indonesian island of Sumatra: a member of the carp family of fish, the Paedocypris progenetica. It is the world's smallest vertebrate or backboned animal; only 7.9 mm (0.3 inches) long.

The title, however, is contested by 6.2 mm (0.2 in) long male anglerfish Photocorynus spiniceps (not technically a fish but a sexual parasite) and the 7 mm (0.27 in) long male stout infantfish Schindleria brevipinguis.

World’s Smallest Horse: 43.18 cm (17-inch) tall

The little horse was born to Paul and Kay Goessling, who specialize in breeding miniature horses, but even for the breed Thumbelina is particularly small: she is thought to be a dwarf-version of the breed. At just 60 lb and 17-inch tall, the five-year-old Thumbelina is the world’s smallest horse.

World’s Smallest Cat: 15.5 cm (6.1-inch) high and 49 cm (19.2-inch) long

Meet Mr. Peebles. He lives in central Illinois, is two years old, weighs about three pounds and is the world's smallest cat! The cat's small stature was verified by the Guinness Book of World Records on 2004.

World's Smallest Hamster: 2.5 cm (0.9-inch) tall
Only slightly bigger than a 50p piece, PeeWee is the smallest hamster in the world. Weighing less than an ounce, the golden hamster stopped growing when he was three weeks old - his five brothers and sisters went on to measure between 4in and 5in.

World's Smallest Chameleon: 1.2 cm (0.5-inch) long

The Brookesia Minima is the world's smallest species of chameleon. This one is just half an inch. Found on the rainforest floor of Nosy Be Island off the north-west coast of Madagascar, females tend to be larger than males.

World's Smallest Lizard: 16 mm (0.6-inch) long

So small it can curl up on a dime or stretch out on a quarter, a typical adult of the species, whose scientific name is Sphaerodactylus ariasae is only about 16 millimeters long, or about three quarters of an inch, from the tip of the snout to the base of the tail. It shares the title of "smallest" with another lizard species named Sphaerodactylus parthenopion, discovered in 1965 in the British Virgin Islands.

World’s Smallest Cattle: 81 cm (31-inch) height

The world’s smallest cattle is a rare breed of an Indian zebu called the Vechur cow. The average height of this breed of cattle is 31 to 35 inches (81 to 91 cm). The photo above shows a 16 year old Vechur cattle as compared to a 6 year old HF cross-breed cow.

World's Smallest Seahorse: 16 mm (0.6-inch) long

The creature, known as Hippocampus denise, is typically just 16 millimetres long - smaller than most fingernails. Some were found to be just 13 mm long. H. denise lives in the tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean, between 13 and 90 metres beneath the surface.
