European Film Awards Finalists

Sometime last month, the European Film Academy announced the 48 films included on their selection list for the 2009 Awards. The nominations, which are to be announced sometime in November, will be pulled from these 48, and the official ceremony will be held in Germany on 12 December. Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah [Gomorra] was the big winner last year, taking prizes for Best Film, Director, Actor, Screenwriter and Cinematographer. The list blogs will slow down soon, as my work doing writing for the Saint Louis International Film Festival is nearing the finish line... the schedule should be announced at the end of next week. More on that later. For now, the 48 "short" list for the European Film Awards. As for the overlapping years between 2008 and 2009, I'm not sure what the window of inclusion is.

Foreign Oscar Submissions, Final Day, UPDATED

Today is the official cut-off period for countries to submit films to be considered for the 2010 Academy Awards in the Foreign Language category. A number of countries (Columbia, Egypt, Iraq, Cuba, Lebanon, Singapore, Puerto Rico) have yet to announce their submissions, though it just may not have been officially mentioned yet. As for the new editions, Greece made a (maybe?) surprising decision to submit Yorgos Lanthimos' controversial Dogtooth, which Kino picked up recently and which has been delighting critics, but it's likely not to connect with the usually tame Academy (the same deal happened when Chile submitted Tony Manero last year... though Götz Spielmann's challenging, but ultimately redemptive, Revanche did make the final five). Israel chose Yaron Shani and Scandar Copti's Ajami over Golden Lion winner Lebanon; China finally settled on Chen Kaige's Forever Enthralled, with Zhang Ziyi; Serbia officially withdrew Here and There, which had over fifty percent of its dialogue in English, and chose Srđan Dragojević's St. George Shoots the Dragon instead; Spain picked former winner Fernando Trueba's El baile de la victoria [The Dancer and the Thief]; and Australia will be making a rare appearance in the running this year with Warwick Thornton's Warlpiri-language Samson and Delilah, winner of the Caméra d'Or at Cannes this year. The newly announced titles are all below. You can find the other updates here, here and here.

Update: Whether it wasn't listed on the site I was looking at or (more likely) I just overlooked it, Peru was left off the list. Their selection will be Claudia Llosa's The Milk of Sorrow [La teta asustada], which took home the Golden Bear at Berlin earlier this year. Just to make things easier, I've included all of the previously announced films with the new ones for a more complete list. Hope this helps.

Making our streets Safer

When I was in Belgium, I was impressed by the variety of efforts to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities. Some of the steps taken included raised intersections, more clearly marked pedestrian crosswalks, warnings for motorcyclists, and separate bicycle lanes.

On returning home, I have become aware of other differences between traffic in Belgian cities and Vancouver. The following are three areas that I think warrant further consideration:

1. KEEP TO THE RIGHT, EXCEPT TO PASS
Drivers in Belgium are much more disciplined in terms of the lanes in which they drive. People rarely 'pass on the inside'. Instead, drivers tend to stay in the inside lane, except when passing. And then they return to the inside lane. I also noticed this level of driver discipline in Australia (albeit, there they keep to the left, except to pass). In fact, it's a CRIME to pass on the inside. I can't help but think this would reduce accidents since on our roads, people seem to be very impatient, passing on the inside, the outside....

2. SPEED CONTROL ZONES
Of course we have speed controls along our roads. However, although the applicable speed zone registered on my GPS navigator in Belgium and Luxembourg (see below, I was in a 70km zone), this does not appear to be the case here (unless I need to do some additional programming). I found it very helpful to be able to check the speed zone, and my actual speed on my navigator as I drove around Belgium, especially since I was also notified of fixed and mobile radar zones. Now, why don't we allow the applicable speed to register here?3. NO RIGHT TURN ON RED LIGHTS
Throughout Belgium, right turns on red lights are prohibited. NowI realize there may be merit in allowing right turns on red lights in certain situations. However, in most others I think they threaten pedestrian safety, and increase the likelihood of vehicle accidents. I wonder if studies have been done to compare traffic accidents in jurisdictions that restrict turns, and those that don't.

Now, some will argue that turns on red lights are necessary to keep traffic moving. I understand this. However, another and perhaps better way to keep traffic moving would be to legislate against people who drive into intersections, and then get 'stuck'. In UK, you would never drive into the intersection 'box' unless you were absolutely certain you could proceed through before the light changes since you would receive a very substantial fine. Why don't we do the same?

Some things to think about.

The Decade List: Awards (2006)

Things are changing yet again. I've expanded a number of the awards per festival and even included a few others, though in lesser detail. Also, I had begun going through each year and discovering what each of the major film countries around the world had named their Best Film (as in award ceremonies, not their Oscar submissions). But just as I started, the Counting Down the Zeroes project at Film for the Soul took a hiatus. I think I may expand on the previous years' Award lists to include all the new additions, but let me tell you what a pain in the ass finding the Oscar equivalent of most countries has been. There will be plenty of discrepancies in terms of year, as not every country uses the January-to-December model to determine their film calendar (Germany, for one, does not). Also, a number of countries don't exactly have glitzy/annoying ceremonies like we do and often deliver their top national prize during the big film festival held there each year. So, please all of you out there, if I've aligned the incorrect prize as the country's top honor, let me know. And if there are any other countries you'd like to see listed (that give out such awards, of course... I couldn't find any information for Belgium), laisse-moi savoir. In the awards below, you'll find plenty of Helen Mirren, Volver, Little Miss fucking Sunshine and The Lives of Others, which allows me to link to the interview I conducted with Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck the week before he won the Academy Award. He's extremely tall, speaks flawless English and was as floored as anyone that neither Volver nor Black Book were nominated in his category.
