G&M reports on proposed container-based housing

Readers of this blog will know that since fall 2008 I have been promoting the idea of factory built relocatable housing as a quick and affordable solution to the urgent housing needs in the DTES and elsewhere in the city. I was therefore delighted to get a call yesterday afternoon from Wendy Stueck of the Globe and Mail who recognized the significance of an initiative by Janice Abbott and Atira Housing. While there are differences between re-used containers, purpose built containers, and factory built modular buildings, the concept is the same...housing can be created in a factory and transported to a site, and be set up quickly and at relatively low cost.

It is interesting to note that Janice Abbott worked with me on the study I produced for BC Housing in March 2009 as a potential operator of a project I was proposing for the city owned Drake Hotel property. Coincidentally, James Weldon was with BC Housing at the time. I am therefore delighted if some of the ideas generated by my study have resulted in this project being realized. I'll be watching it with great interest, and others should too. Thanks Wendy for giving the story a broader reach.

Vancouver mulls container-based housing

VANCOUVER— From Thursday's Globe and Mail
Vancouver is weighing a proposal that would turn shipping containers into housing units on the Downtown Eastside.

The proposal, part of a project that would also restore a rundown hotel in the neighbourhood, is designed to provide housing for young women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including some who may be working as prostitutes.

Starting with two containers that B.C. Hydro donated to a nonprofit housing agency after using them as a demonstration project during the 2010 Olympic Games, the project is designed to drastically reduce construction costs and timelines, says James Weldon of Vancouver-based JWT Consulting, which would build the project if the city gives it a green light.

“A lot of inefficiencies in construction is all these multiple components coming together to create the frame, the structure,” Mr. Weldon said on Wednesday. “You could, in theory, drop this on the site and be drywalling two days later. That would never happen on a traditional building. One of the major efficiencies is just the schedule – the longer the schedule, the more expensive stuff is.”

Vancouver-based Atira Housing, which is also behind the push to redevelop the United We Can recycling site on East Hastings, put forward the container-based housing proposal after concluding it didn’t have enough money to build housing on an infill site next to the dilapidated hotel, Atira executive director Janice Abbott said.

And while there was a possibility of longer-term financing and partners coming together, the need was immediate. Outreach workers for Watari – the nonprofit that will be referring prospective residents to what is being called Imoutu House – see dozens of young women every month who need housing and, in some cases, are trading sex to have a roof over their head, Watari executive director Michelle Fortin said.

“They are 15, 16, 17 years of age and don’t want to jump through the hoops for a foster home or a group home or that sort of thing,” Ms. Fortin said.

The container-based units – up to a dozen of them – would sit on the empty lot next to the hotel. They would supplement the supervised units in the hotel, which would feature a “house mother” and support including contact with the provincial Children’s Ministry.

There are sizable, well-known container-based housing projects in cities such as Amsterdam and London. “It’s something new for Vancouver, but it’s not something new elsewhere in the world,” Ms. Abbott said.

Lower costs – Mr. Weldon said containers might be available for as little as $6,000 or even potentially donated – mean that container-based projects could be used as a bridge to more permanent housing or as a stopgap measure on sites while planning or major redevelopment takes place.

“Whether it is recycled shipping containers or modular housing, one advantage is that it can be easily moved,” Vancouver-based real-estate consultant Michael Geller said. “So if and when that site is needed for a higher building or more density, those structures can be moved.”

Lower-cost modular or prefabricated structures could help cities boost their housing stock while plans and money are being put together for bigger projects, said Councillor Kerry Jang, who earlier this year spearheaded a motion through council to solicit proposals for modular housing on city land.

Such proposals need not be restricted to social or low-cost housing, Mr. Jang said. “It’s not just boxes for poor people. The real advantage is in time and cost that it takes to put together.”

"A Dream Within a Dream" (1849)

by Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow—
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand—
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep—while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

-- THE END --

for Orpheus. Eurydice. Hermes. And Barbara with infinite love as I falter on the road to Ithaka

"A Dream Within a Dream" is a poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1849. The poem is 24 lines, divided into two stanzas. The poem questions the way one can distinguish between reality and fantasy, asking, "Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?"

Analysis

"A Dream Within a Dream" reflects Poe's feelings about his life at the time, dramatizing his confusion in watching the important things in his life slip away.[1] Realizing he cannot hold onto even one grain of sand leads to his final question that all things are a dream.[2]

The poem references "golden sand," an image derived from the 1848 discovery of gold in California.[1]

Alternately, it may be interpreted that the "golden sand" is an allusion to the author's loved ones, and that each is inevitably swept away by death (the pitiless wave), no matter how tight a clasp the author tries to retain them with.

Publication history

The poem was first published in the March 31, 1849 edition of a Boston-based periodical called Flag of Our Union.[2] The same publication had only two weeks before first published Poe's short story "Hop-Frog." The next month, owner Frederick Gleason announced it could no longer pay for whatever articles and poems it published.

Adaptations

The Alan Parsons Project's album Tales of Mystery and Imagination opens with an instrumental homage to the poem. Its 1987 re-release included a narration by Orson Welles.

The Propaganda album A Secret Wish features the track "A dream within a dream"; the lyric of the song is this poem.

Biological Radio, the 1997 Dreadzone album, features the track "Dream Within A Dream" which quotes lines from the poem.

Britney Spears' 2001-2002 Dream Within a Dream Tour is heavily themed on the poem.

The Yardbirds' recorded a musical adaptation for their 2003 album Birdland.

The 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock (directed by Peter Weir) features the character Miranda reciting these lines, slightly inaccurate, from Poe's poem.

Happy Birthday Poe Actor & Gomez Addams John Astin

John Allen Astin (born March 30, 1930) is an American actor who has appeared in numerous films and television shows, and is best known for the role of Gomez Addams on The Addams Family, and other similarly eccentric comedic characters.

Early years

Astin was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Margaret Linnie (née Mackenzie) and Dr. Allen Varley Astin, who was the director of the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology).[1] He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1952, after transferring from Washington and Jefferson College. He initially studied mathematics at Washington & Jefferson then became a drama major at Johns Hopkins; he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Johns Hopkins.

Career

Astin started in theater, doing voice-over work for commercials. His first big break came with a small part in West Side Story in 1961. At this time, he also guest starred on the ABC sitcom, Harrigan and Son, starring Pat O'Brien. In 1962–1963, he starred with Marty Ingels in the sitcom I'm Dickens, He's Fenster, which aired thirty-one episodes in a single season. From 1964–1966, he starred in The Addams Family as Gomez Addams, the head of the macabre family. He appeared in the TV show The New Addams Family as Grandpapa Addams in 1998, with the role of Gomez Addams played by Glenn Taranto.

Astin also played the Riddler on ABC's Batman during Frank Gorshin's second season departure. (Gorshin came back for the third and final season.) He played submarine commander Matthew Sherman in the 1970s TV series Operation Petticoat. He also made a notable appearance in popular mystery show Murder, She Wrote, as the villainous Sheriff Harry Pierce. He had a recurring role on the sitcom Night Court as Buddy, eccentric former mental patient and the stepfather of lead character Harry Stone. He also played the regular role of Ed LaSalle in the short-lived Mary Tyler Moore sitcom Mary during the 1985–86 television season. He guest starred on numerous television series too, including a Gunsmoke appearance in 1967 as Festus's cousin Henry, Jack Palance's ABC circus drama, The Greatest Show on Earth and Duckman.

Astin received an Academy Award nomination for Prelude, a short film that he wrote, produced, and directed. He was nominated for an Ace Award for his work on Tales from the Crypt, and received an Emmy nomination for the cartoon voice of Gomez on ABC-TV's The Addams Family. He also voiced the character Bull Gator on the animated series Taz-Mania. Astin served for four years on the Board of Directors of the Writers Guild of America, and has been active in community affairs in Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

He has continued to work in acting, appearing in a string of Killer Tomatoes films as Professor Gangreen and as Professor Wickwire in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

He also has toured the one-man play Edgar Allan Poe: Once Upon a Midnight, written by Paul Day Clemens and Ron Magid. In a December 2007, Baltimore Examiner interview, Astin said of his acting experience:

“We all struggle, and I had plenty of that, but I've had a great time. I've done hundreds of TV shows and 30 to 40 movies, and I love acting. I'm very happy having done the Poe. That's been really terrific.[2] ”

Teaching

Astin currently teaches method acting and directing in the Writing Seminars Department at Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater. Commenting on his dual career, he said in 2007, "I don't know one major university that has a known actor teaching every day."[2] He hopes to re-establish a drama major at the university, noting that he is one of only a handful to earn a drama degree from Hopkins. Astin can be seen singing and playing cowbell in a music video from JHU released in December 2009.

Personal life

He has five sons, three (David, Allen, and Tom) by his first wife, Suzanne Hahn, and another (Mackenzie Astin) by his second wife, actress Patty Duke. John also legally adopted Sean Astin, Duke's son from a previous marriage. John Astin is currently married to Valerie Ann Sandobal and lives in Baltimore. He is a practicing Buddhist.[2]

His younger brother, Alexander Astin, is a professor emeritus at UCLA. He has five granddaughters: Alexandra, Elizabeth, Isabella, Sedona and Jaya.
